A NEW cricket society has been founded in Huddersfield, which is aimed at catering for cricket enthusiasts of all types.

The Pennine Cricket Society will hold monthly meetings throughout the winter (from October to March) with the first one planned for Thursday, October 27, at Golcar Cricket Club.

Dr Peter Davies, from the University of Huddersfield, is the main organiser of the new society and said: “This is a very exciting development.

“The aim is to put on some attractive speakers and get people talking about the game.”

Acclaimed after-dinner speaker Alan Stuttard is the first guest next Thursday, while others include Central Lancashire League expert Dave Cooper, Hanif Mayet and Farid Karolia from Mount CC, in Batley, Todmorden authors Brian, Malcolm and Freda Heywood, Illingworth historian Andrew Smith and cricket website designer Lee Booth.

“It’s all very exciting,” added Dr Davies.

“We have some knowledgeable speakers planned and, with food and good company on offer, we can promise some enjoyable nights.”

The meetings will all take place at Golcar’s Swallow Lane ground between 7pm and 9pm.
