HOLMFIRTH High School are thankful for the help of Huddersfield coaches as they reflect on retaining the County Challenge Cup.
The school’s Under 13s again beat Easingwold in the final at Headingley and PE teacher Ryan Blezzard said:
“The outstanding work of coaches at local clubs and representative sides has seen the players go from strength to strength.
“It really is a fantastic achievement for the school to win it two years in succession, and the lads remain unbeaten in any competition now for two years.”
Holmfirth were captained by Tom Mighall, who was the only survivor from last year’s winning team, and he led them to a comfortable victory over Benton Park School, from Leeds, in the semi-finals.
In the final, Easingwold began well reaching 40-0 in 10 overs, but once they lost their Yorkshire junior Ed Clowes, caught by Mighall off the bowling of Matt Fisher, they were pegged back and dismissed for 77.
When Holmfirth replied they lost both openers with a single run on the board and then lost Thomas Webster with the score on 8-3.
But skipper Mighall hit top form and with Ben Earnshaw put on 56 for the next wicket, to take Holmfirth to the brink of victory before the captain was out, leaving Earnshaw (31 no) to hit the winning runs.
