RASTRICK enjoyed a rare moment in the spotlight as they dumped Slaithwaite out of the Sykes Cup.

The Round Hill club had been resident in Section B longer than any other in the Huddersfield League and, on paper, looked to have no chance in their second-round clash with the Section A high-fliers.

Slaithwaite went into the game having remained second to Elland in the league by breezing to a 79-run win at Bradley Mills.

But they came unstuck against a Rastrick side who had John Edge (29) and Mark Osborne (67) to thank for providing the foundation of their challenging 193-9 total.

Indeed it was only the bowling of Australian Steve Mace (5-52) which prevented the home side topping 200.

Spectators sensed an upset when Slaithwaite slumped to 35-4, leaving them relying on Mace and Gary Binks to guide them out of trouble.

They contributed 56 and 53 respectively, but Rastrick refused to give up, and with Andrew James (4-52) and Michael Baikie (5-72) bowling superbly, Slaithwaite were all out for 185.

Elland marched on at the expense of Linthwaite.

Having seen off Kirkheaton by eight wickets in the league the day before, they put the cup-tie beyond doubt by amassing a monstrous 294-5 at the tight Manchester Road ground.

Aussie ace Mark Curry, pictured, required only 68 minutes and 33 scoring shots to rattle up his 101, and with the wickets shared around the Hullen Edge attack, Linthwaite were shot out for 91.

Holmfirth, third in Section A after beating Linthwaite by two wickets, also made the quarter-finals beating Lascelles Hall by 39 runs.

The match was a personal triumph for skipper Road Kelly.

Having chalked up his first career century at the Hall in a league match a fortnight earlier, he returned to repeat the feat.

This time the opener carried his bat for 132 as his side scored 222-4, a total the home side never threatened.

Holmfirth’s valley rivals Scholes, however, lost out in their battle with fellow former Central League club Kexborough.

The Barnsley side blasted their way to 209-5, and despite Nicky Brook’s 104, Scholes could reach only 200-7 in reply.

Central League Denby were swept aside by Golcar, who eased past their visitors’ 84 for the loss of just two wickets.

Hall Bower, Primrose Hill and Almondbury were all seeking upsets, only to be disappointed.

Max Dyson (81) helped Hall Bower to 170-6, but it took only 33 overs for Shepley to win.

Shahid Mahboob’s seven for 66 helped Skelmanthorpe send back Almondbury for 129, a total bettered without a wicket going down, while Meltham beat Pip Hill by 28 runs.
