IAN WHITELEY propelled Holmfirth into a promotion  place in the Drakes League  Championship Two section  after wrecking Hoylandswaine  with the best bowling figures of  the season.

The Holmfirth seamer ripped  through the Swaine line-up,  taking an incredible nine for 20  in 11.4 overs, five of which were  maidens, to dismiss the Haigh  Lane outfit for 63.

Whiteley’s haul (the best  return in the League for more  than two years) included five  clean bowled victims, three  given out leg before, and one  caught. Charlie Allen deprived  him of all 10, however, when he  bagged the wicket of junior Ben  Hoyle.

The day’s other remarkable  bowling effort came in the  Premiership from Armitage  Bridge’s Martin Hallas, who  went on as second change  bowler and proceeded to skittle  Marsden out for 51 with six  wickets for just four runs, which  included a rare hat trick, in a  four-over burst.

There was also a hat trick at  Linthwaite for Gavin Dyson as  he  took four for 31 in the  Conference Two game against  Almondbury, only to finish on  the losing side, beaten by six  runs.

Kirkburton jumped to the  top  of the Premiership after beating  Meltham by  eight wickets, while  previous leaders and reigning  champions Slaithwaite were  being rolled over at Barkisland,  thanks to Daniel Sykes, who  carved out an unbeaten 121,  backed up by Charlie Cocking  (75) before then taking three  wickets in the home side’s  87-run victory.
