SKELMANTHORPE are aiming to create a little bit of history in the Spectrum Interiors Paddock Shield.

Steve Glover’s second XI emulated their first team in the Sykes Cup by reaching the final with a comprehensive victory in their semi-final against Clayton West.

And now Skelmanthorpe will be aiming to lift the famous old Shield for the first time in their history – they have lost previously in several finals – when they tackle either Scholes or Golcar in the showpiece on Sunday, August 15.

Clayton were never allowed to get into their stride with the bat and were rushed out for just 111 in 41.4 overs, Jamie Jagger claiming 3-32, Scott Jagger three for 26 and Josh Ingham three for 13 off seven.

Only Alex Clegg offered any serious resistance for Clayton with an excellent 56.

Skelmanthorpe lost wickets by trying to reach their target too quickly, but Dan Barber’s 44 anchored their effort and they got home in just 21 overs.

Scholes and Golcar meet in the second semi-final at Chapelgate on Sunday (1.00).

The two semi-finalists met in the League at Golcar, with Scholes coming out on top in a high-scoring affair.

Golcar hammered 274-7 in the Drakes Premiership Two clash with Irfan Ali hitting 74 at the top of the order, Dan Woodhead 47 in the middle order and then some solid contributions late on from Gareth Crowther (28), Chris Chapman (28) and Matt Day (29no).

Skipper Craig Marsh was the best of the Scholes bowlers with three for 47 and he then went on to make a valuable 42 in the successful run chase.

Keeper Tom Boorman missed his half century by three, but it was experienced duo Phil Birkhead (53no) and Gareth Wakefield (44no) who carried the visitors home.

Howard Palmer hit 95 for Elland in their win against Emley while his old Meltham teammate Barry Shaw was in fine form in the Frank Platt Championship Two, hitting 109 not out as they overhauled Micklehurst’s 169 total for the loss of just one wicket – Will Fraine backing up his excellent unbeaten century of the previous week with 57. Jordan Steeples, who claimed five wickets the previous week, had another two for Meltham, while Jason Boyd took five for 56.

Top Premiership performance was by Kirkburton batsmen David Greaves and Steve Jessop, who hit 124 not out and 126 respectively in their victory over Marsden, who hit 248-9 in response to 318-3.

There was an exciting finish to the Championship clash at Thongsbridge, where Phil Lees hit the final ball for four to win against Delph & Dobcross, who reached 166-9 to top the Bridge’s 163-8. George Webster batted through for 70 for the home side, while Lees finished on 75no for Delph.
