SUPER Shelley are the Yorkshire Lords Taverners Under 14 School cricket champions after beating Scarborough College by 35 runs in the final.

Having already knocked out Holmfirth, Royds Hall, Heckmondwike, QEGSs and Kingston to reach the final, Shelley had to travel the East coast side on their own pitch.

Put in to bat on a difficult track, Shelley struggled to reach 128 from 40 overs, with captain Jonny Hoyle top-scoring with a patient 30, while Tom Halton (22) and Dec McGivern (20) gave support.

With Scarborough needing only a shade over three an over the total did not look a particularly tall order, however they were soon to discover that runs were not going to be easy come by against Josh Scott and Jimmy Burke.

Gradually the asking rate began to rise and when Jordan Greaves took a stunning catch to dismiss their No4 batsman Oliver West, Shelley began to feel the game was there for the taking.

Brad Bond, who was unlucky not to be named man of the match by the umpires, came on to bowl and took four for 13 as Scarborough quickly folded to 93 all out.

Alan Shaw, from the Yorkshire Schools Cricket Association presented the trophy and medals to the victorious Shelley side who were crowned champions from a starting entry of 121 teams.
