EMLEY Seconds’ misery was completed as Kirkburton clinched promotion to Drakes Premiership Two.

Clarence would have gone up as Frank Platt Conference champions had they not been docked six points for disturbances during their game against Kirkheaton on September 1.

That left them to take on Cedar Court Conference runners-up Burton in a play-off – and they were beaten by five wickets. Mike Smith scored 71 to lead Burton to victory in the one-off clash at Scholes.

Clarence batted first and made 163, with Simon Sykes and James Tedder each scoring 33. Gavin Smith was the pick of the Burton bowlers with two for 29 from 12 overs.

His team were in trouble at 27-3 and 57-5, but after coming off for an hour-long rain break, Smith took the game to Emley.

He teamed up with Steve Jepson (30no) to put on an unbeaten 110 and see the Riley Lane team through.
