UPPERTHONG are the Examiner Romida Salver winners for their first time.

They overcame Slaithwaite in the Under 13 showpiece at a breezy but sunny Upper Hopton.

Batting first, the Upperthong batsmen took full advantage of the difficulties faced by Slaithwaite in bowling accurately in the wind, Tom Mighall retiring on 25, George Oakley on 26 and Greg Moorhouse hitting 20 in a total of 114-5.

Jack Keeling and Ed Garside got the Slaithwaite innings off to a flying start but, halfway through, their reply was pulled back by the spin bowling of Ben Earnshaw, who took two for five in his three overs.

Slaithwaite then steadily lost wickets and gradually fell behind the required rate, Mighall sealing victory with his spell of two for four from three overs.

Mighall was chosen as man-of-the-match by Richard Horner, president of the Huddersfield Coaching Association who has recently retired manager of the Leeds/Bradford UCCE.

He also presented the trophy and, in his closing remarks, Mr Horner said he had enjoyed the day’s play immensely and was pleased with the technical quality of the cricket.

In the semi-finals, Slaithwaite had come through against Kirkburton, while Upperthong beat Denby Dale.

There were notable performances for the defeated semi-final teams by Adam Rammell and Alex Jacques, of Denby Dale, and L Atkinson, of Kirkburton.

Keeling, Garside and William England did well for Slaithwaite, as did Mighall and Ryan Wadsworth for Upperthong.
