KIRKBURTON went out at the group stage in the national final of the Asda Kwik Cricket at Grace Road, Leicester.

Having won the regional event at Headingley, Kirkburton represented the North East in the 16-team national shoot-out.

In their group games, Kirkburton were up against St Andrew’s from Boothstown in Lancashire, Sandwich from Kent and Abbey from Leicester, with only the winners – who turned out to be Abbey – going through to the semi-finals.

There, Abbey lost to St Michael’s from Devon, who lost in the overall final to Uplands Primary from Sandhurst, who totalled 242 for a 10-run win.

England’s Vikram Solanki was at the finals.
