Liam Rothery hit a six off the last ball to win the Waterfront Insurance Evening Cricket League Emmerson Cup final for Golcar Soaks.

They had needed 15 off the last over to beat Meltham Wanderers and got there with Rothery’s last-gasp effort.

His 22 not out took the Soaks to 134-7 in reply to 131-9 and made for a nail-biting finale to the showpiece at Slaithwaite CC.

Meltham Wanderers started strongly when they batted, but some good bowling by Golcar Soaks’ Craig Horner, with four for 30, and Tom Brown (three for 34) restricted them to 131-9 in their 15 overs.

Only the batting of Jack Hinchliffe, with 28 in the middle order, gave Meltham Wanderers a respectable total and this earned the young batsman the Man of the Match award.

Golcar Soaks replied with an excellent opening stand, Nick Jagger making 36 and Chris Fawcette 29, but then with Wanderers change bowler, Brooke took three for 25 to slow the Soaks’ response.

It then took Rothery’s last-over heroics to seal a three-wicket win.

In the Priestley Cup final, Thompson Cooling scored a 10-wicket win against NatWest Bank, who totalled 85-9.

After being put in by Thompson Cooling, NatWest got off to a flier with the first two balls going for boundaries, however tight bowling, coupled with regular wickets being taken, pegged NatWest back.

Thompson Cooling fielded excellently and, off their 12 overs, NatWest closed on 85-9.

Jamie Cummins top scored with 23 and Ty Akram chipped in with 20, with Beaumont (two for 13) and Moss (two for 20) being the pick of the Thompson Cooling bowlers.

Needing an early breakthrough to put them under pressure, NatWest tried hard but could simply not dislodge the opening pair of Winterbottom (39 not out) and Wood (29 not out).

They played out a measured run chase, hitting the winning runs off the penultimate over.
