Nathan Jones epitomised a real team effort as Huddersfield Under 15s reached the final of the Taverners Yorkshire Junior Cricket Festival.

He hit three successive centuries, including a double ton, during the week and Huddersfield were well on top against Doncaster in the final at Copley – after posting a record score of 361-7 – when rain came and forced a re-arrangement (on a date still to be fixed).

The results and performances underline the massive talent Huddersfield has at the Under 15 age group and a good number of the team are already making their mark at Drakes League level.

Huddersfield – under team manager Neil Daniel of Marsden – opened the Festival with a three-wicket win against Wetherby at Broad Oak.

Delph’s Siraj Sajid and Meltham’s Jack Hinchliffe each took three wickets as Wetherby were restricted to 178 all out.

Sajid then top-scored with the bat, making 59, while Kirkheaton’s Nathan Swift saw them over the line at 182-7 with an unbeaten 43.

The following day, Aire-Wharfe were crushed at Addingham – Huddersfield bowling them out for 85 and going on to an eight-wicket win.

Jones, who had been on duty with Lancashire’s Under 15s, then hit his first century, exactly 100, as previously unbeaten York were toppled at Thongsbridge.

Alec Jakeman added 49 to Jones’s ton and Swift 45 not out as Huddersfield put up 275-5, Sajid then taking three for 32 as York were sent back for 185 in reply.

That win sent Daniel’s side into the semi-finals, where they were up against North Yorkshire at Undercliffe.

Jones piled up a magnificent 203 and Benji Birkhead of Rastrick 111 in a daunting Huddersfield total of 343-3.

Spinner Sajid ensured North Yorkshire were never going to be in the hunt with a six for 33 haul and they were all out for 140.

Huddersfield’s form continued into the final – and so did that of Jones and Birkhead.

Jones hit 147 and Birkhead 91 as the Doncaster bowling was flayed for a record 361-7.

Doncaster were reeling on 78-6 in reply when rain stopped play after 26 overs and, under the rules of the competition, the final has to be re-started if it can’t be completed.
