A quarter of a century on from winning the Drakes League title, Sykes Cup and Examiner Mini treble, Skelmanthorpe are holding a reunion of that successful side this coming Sunday.

A number of that famous Lidgett Lane side are still around and one of them, Darren Hinchliffe, is still opening the batting and doing his bit with the ball for Meltham.

Phil Redgwick and Geoff Crompton remain familiar figures on any matchday at the ground, while wicketkeeper Jason Tyas has gone on to be a Football League linesman.

Mick Saville, unfortunately, has passed away but club chairman Graham Crossland is hoping as many of the others as possible will go along for a get-together.

Michael Bridge opened the batting in an order which included Hinchliffe, Graham Higgins, Richard Crosland, skipper Graeme Hurlbatt, Steve Gummerson and others.

Still playing - Meltham Bowler, Daz Hinchliffe.

Star of the show on many occasions was Shahid Mahboob, who played one Test for Pakistan, as Skelmanthorpe topped the Section A table with 77 points, ahead of Shepley, Elland and Holmfirth.

Mahboob had 38 clean bowled victims during the 26-match campaign – but Almondbury’s Simon Kay took the league bowling prize for Section B winners Almondbury, with 63 wickets at 11.21.

Skelmanthorpe’s first-class import, however, finished with a remarkable 114 wickets at 14.89 and was unstoppable in the Sykes Cup final against Slaithwaite, which was won by 114 runs.

After Skelmanthorpe had totalled 203-8 in their 50 overs – the final was played at Kirkheaton for the first time – with Bridge top-scoring on 73 and Higgins getting 41, Mahboob went to work with the ball.

He ripped through the Slaithwaite batting with eight for 40 in 21.1 overs, recording the best ever figures in the final, beating Stuart Armitage’s eight for 44 for Elland against Hall Bower in 1971. Not surprisingly, he was man of the match.

Incidentally, in the league, Tyas shared the wicketkeeping prize with a certain Alan Mynett – now of Hoylandswaine and then of Kirkburton – with 35 victims.

Of course, Skelmanthorpe brushed aside all-comers in the Examiner Mini (the eight-a-side competition which has gone on to become the Total Indoor Cricket Solutions T20 Trophy).

Around that time you would find some very familiar names on the Skelmanthorpe playing roster, including Aspinall, Dyson, Dollive, Greaves and Hepworth.

Happy days!
