Scholes, Shepley and Linthwaite are through to the second round of the arrowselfdrive Sykes Cup.

Northern Districts batsman Joe Carter continued his prolific form for Scholes with 73 not out as they defeated Jedi Sports Championship side Cawthorne by eight wickets at Chapelgate.

Cawthorne resumed on 126-8 following Sunday’s abandoned play and managed to post a total of 143 all out, Adam France cleaning up to finish with four for 33 off 9.2 overs, after spinner Tom Boorman and swing bowler Josh Brook had picked up two wickets apiece.

The Premiership side made a solid start in reply thanks to Tom Chadwick (21) and Boorman (31), but it was Carter who pressed the accelerator with 10 fours and three sixes in his unbeaten knock, fellow import from Bay of Plenty Pete Drysdale – who is playing for Leicestershire Seconds against Derbyshire from today – remaining 14 not out.

At Shepley, Jamie Haynes picked up three for 27 and Ben Howitt three for 34 as the Marsh Lane top-flight side were bowled out for 206 by Championship visitors Thongsbridge, runs coming from Amar Rashid (33), Tom Denton (37), Oli Davidson (38) and skipper Danny Glover (29).

Thongsbridge were skittled for 76 in reply, however, as Rashid took three wickets and Danny Wood two. Richard Marshall was the only Thongsbridge batsman to make headway with 43.

Linthwaite went through after posting 242 at home to Armitage Bridge before dismissing the visitors for 163.

Former Shelley player Imran Malik top scored for the Manchester Road side with 43 while Muhammad Imran remained 34 not out – Faheem Hussain the best of the Armitage Bridge bowlers with four for 60 against his former club.

Jaycob Curtling replied with 70 for the Bridge and last man Haydn Charlton 44, but they couldn’t threaten the total.

All the other ties will be played this coming Sunday.
