SADLY, the only Huddersfield representation at Sunday’s Heavy Woollen Cup final will be from former Kirkheaton skipper Alan Stevenson, who has been invited as part of the competition’s 125th anniversary celebrations.

Winning captains have been invited to join Cup officials, but only a dozen or so have taken up the offer, and Stevenson is the only one from this area, Kirkheaton having won the old trophy in 1985 when they beat Mirfield by four wickets in the final at Ossett.

This year’s final is being staged at Spen Vic (noon) and features holders Wrenthorpe against Barnsley, both of whom have been involved in disputed ties this season.

Wrenthorpe, of course, should have played at Delph & Dobcross in the fourth round, but were ‘gifted’ a place in the semis when the Drakes League side were unable to play.

Barnsley also went through in similar fashion.

Representatives from Drakes League clubs are reminded next Wednesday’s League Council meeting starts at 7pm, not 7.30pm.
