THERE’S something to be said for occasionally taking the scenic route, particularly in this day and age, when rushing from A to B seems to be the norm.

But there are times when you simply don’t need the delay.

Take the Slaithwaite cricketer who dashed from his Manchester base on the train to Huddersfield Railway station on Saturday lunchtime, where he promptly dived into a taxi in St George’s Square and said “Golcar Cricket Club please.”

What a surprise then, when his driver announced some threequarters-of-an-hour later: “here we are then – Glossop Cricket Club!”

Now, no-one is suggesting that had he arrived at the start instead of over halfway through Golcar’s innings it would have made a major difference, but in Slaithwaite’s current parlous state who knows what damage that taxi driver may have caused.

On such events could relegation be decided?
