ENGLAND captain Michael Vaughan continued his rehabilitation with a honed 72 before being run out in bizarre fashion in Yorkshire's LV County Championship clash at Hampshire.

Vaughan, who might have been run out after making two, was on his way to his first Championship century for four years when he was involved in a mix-up with Younis Khan.

Vaughan (inset) hit a delivery from Shane Warne to mid-on and called the Pakistan batsman for a single.

But Younis refused to leave his crease and Vaughan, trying to regain his ground, was easily beaten by a throw from Hampshire debutant Stuart Clark.

Younis more than made up for his part in Vaughan's calamity by hitting 106 but Yorkshire collapsed to 299 all out and Hampshire closed on 25 without loss.

Vaughan, looking close to his old England best, batted for three hours and hit 11 boundaries as he and Younis (and later Adil Rashid, 54), put Yorkshire in a strong position just after tea.

Younis and Rashid put on 99 for the sixth wicket before Hampshire took the new ball when the score was 282-5 and the effects were devastating.

James Bruce and James Tomlinson ripped through the Yorkshire tail taking five wickets for 17 between them in nine deadly overs.

Younis was the first to go, lbw on the back foot to Bruce. His dismissal was quickly followed by that of Rashid, who hit five fours before lifting Tomlinson to long leg where Bruce took the catch.

Bruce then removed Jason Gillespie and captain Darren Gough in the space of three balls before Tomlinson crushed the resistance by having Tim Bresnan caught.

Bruce finished with four for 56, his best performance of the new season, while Australian Clark took only the one wicket - that of Jacques Rudolph.

Clark's final figures were one for 37 while Tomlinson took two for 68.

Hampshire were left with eight overs and openers Michael Brown and James Adams batted through.
