MICHAEL VAUGHAN was again unable to produce a major innings but Yorkshire sealed a draw with Nottinghamshire at Headingley.

The England captain hit six fours in his 34 from 77 deliveries before he was bowled off the inside edge, attempting to cut off-spinner Graeme Swann.

England seamers Ryan Sidebottom (3-39) and Stuart Broad (2-26), plus Swann helped to restrict the hosts to 187-8.

Earlier, Notts were dismissed for 422 with Chris Read finishing on 142, Tim Bresnan taking 3-1 in 11 balls.

Notts secured maximum batting points, with Read finally out for 142 when Bresnan held on to a top-edge off his own bowling.

Yorkshire, facing a deficit of 123, lost Joe Sayers, who was caught at fourth slip off Sidebottom shortly before lunch.

After Vaughan's surprise departure when he again looked well set, skipper Anthony McGrath was caught behind hooking at Broad, and Read took another catch when first innings century maker Jacques Rudolph followed one from Sidebottom for 32.

Adil Rashid was caught round the corner off Sidebottom to leave the Tykes at 149-5, only 26 ahead.

With the final hour approaching, Andrew Gale pushed at Swann and was caught at slip by Ealham and Brophy checked a drive at Broad to be held by Mark Wagh at mid-on.

South African Morne Morkel, who left the field with a leg injury the previous day, came in to bat with a runner and drove Swann to the boundary, but he then popped up a catch to Swann at silly mid-on.

Captain Darren Gough joined Bresnan at 168-8 and the ninth wicket pair managed to cling on until Notts called it a day with Yorkshire eight down, 64 runs ahead, with six overs remaining.

Yorkshire's director of cricket, Martyn Moxon, insisted there were no problems with Vaughan ahead of the first Test with New Zealand on May 15.

“I thought he played very well for the 30 overs which were possible on the first day and he batted extremely well again,” said Moxon.

“Technically, he is absolutely spot on and he just needs the volume of runs to go with it. If he goes on playing like this you can expect a big hundred from him very soon.”

Vaughan will be hoping that comes today when Yorkshire are hosting Durham at Headingley Carnegie in the Friends Provident Trophy.
