TALENTED Golcar player Steve Whitwam has become the first Drakes cricketer to retain the Jack Gledhill Memorial Trophy.

The prize is awarded each season to the best all-rounder in the Huddersfield League and Whitwam has won it for a second successive summer.

Whitwam, formerly with Scholes, is only the second player to win the Trophy more than once, following Meltham's three-times winner Paul Booth.

In batting, left-hander Whitwam rattled up 1,017 runs in Premiership and Romida Sykes Cup, averaging 59.82 in his 21 knocks and with a highest score of 171.

Bowling wise, the spinner who plays for the Drakes representative side was also well up in the League standings with 49 wickets at an average of 19.79, bowling 314.3 overs (including 74 maidens) and conceding 970 runs.

The Johnny Hunter Rosebowl awards have thrown up a unique situation this year.

The prizes are for the outstanding individual performance of the season at first and second XI level.

And this time those performances came on the same day - June 10.

The first XI Rosebowl has gone to Craig Ruscoe of Broad Oak when playing against Clayton West away.

Ruscoe not only took the wicket of Stuart Rank when bowling, but he went in at No6 and scored 144 out of 283-8.

Kirkheaton's John Phayer took the second XI award.

After Kirkheaton had totalled 199-7 (without his help), he ripped the Lepton Highlanders' batting to shreds with figures of nine for 30 as they fell to 58 all out.
