Dominic Vesely, of Thongsbridge, lost out in one of the best finals ever seen at the Sellers International Tennis Tournament.

Hosts Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash club had 54 entrants in their 9 and Under Boys event – including former Town striker Ronnie Jepson’s son, Will – and the last two left were Vesely and Miles Minchin, from the Hoole club in Chester.

After an incredible battle featuring some enthralling rallies, Minchin emerged the winner 7-5 8-6.

Huddersfield’s Senior Performance Coach Becky Lee said: “The standard of tennis in the final between Dominic and Miles was outstanding.

“It was one of the best finals at that age group I have ever seen, so well done to the pair of them.”

In the girls section of the same age group, Gabriella Lindley, of Thongsbridge, also reached the final and also lost in a thriller, this time 8-6 4-7 9-7 to Millie Skelton, of Cottingham LTC.

Cadence Simpson of Huddersfield won two of her four matches in the same event.

The 8 and Under competition is mixed and Thongsbridge produced the winner, Thomas Vale beating Hima Fernando (Manchester) 10-5 in the final.

Zak Lloyd of Huddersfield was a group winner and eventually finished fourth.

Tuesday’s play features the completion of the boys and girls 14 events and the start of the 18 and Under tournaments.

In the 14s, the No3 and No4 girls seeds were knocked out – Millie Jacobs losing 0-6 6-4 10-5 to Kay Reader, of Goole, and Natalie Flynn going down 6-3 6-2 to Abigail Wild, of Sheffield.

The Mixed Doubles qualifying starts on Wednesday evening.

Visitors are welcome to the tournament, with play throughout each day and evening this week, bar and refreshments available.

“Good weather is forecast and there will be some superb tennis, so there is plenty for people to enjoy,” added coach Lee.

“There’s a heat wave forecast for Friday, so we’re looking forward to that!”
