AFC Emley remain top of the Northern Counties East League Division One courtesy of a 2-1 win at home over Eccleshill United.

The result also sees Emley surpass their highest points total for a NCE season – as well as breaking their highest number of wins in a league season.

Goals from Ashley Flynn and Max Leonard were enough to see Emley come from behind following a Marcus Edwards goal, with Emley skipper Paul Sykes also missing from the penalty spot late on.

The visitors took the lead from the penalty spot early in the first half.

Sam Jerome was adjudged to have tripped the Eccleshill player in the box, with Edwards stepping up and sending Adam Lawlor the wrong way.

The lead didn’t last long as Emley struck back minutes later through Flynn. The striker found himself unmarked as he headed a Leonard cross past Joseph Demartino.

Emley got their second not long later, this time Leonard going from provider to scorer.

Emley were given a free kick on the edge of the area, which the wide man struck low at goal, with Demartino unable to prevent it from nestling in the bottom corner.

Both sides had a handful of chances in the first half, with Jerome heading a Leonard corner wide of goal, whilst at the other end Edwards struck an effort straight at Lawlor.

The second half was a similar affair, with both sides trying to find the next goal, but could not make the most of their opportunities.

Leonard and Tunnacliffe linked up well down the left, however, Leonard couldn’t capitalise and he put his cross come shot over the bar.

At the other end Jermaine Springer rose highest at a corner, but could only put his header wide.

Both sides had a succession of set pieces but neither could convert one into a telling attempt on goal.

Emley had the chance to get the third from the penalty spot after Leonard had been felled in the box, however, Demartino guessed the right way and held onto Sykes’ strike.

Eccleshill had a chance to grab a late equaliser, however Springer headed his effort narrowly wide of goal.
