Shelley are enjoying their midweek trans-Pennine trips in the Hallmark Security North West Counties League this season.

After Tuesday-night victories at Nelson and Chadderton, the Huddersfield team made a Monday mission to Daisy Hill and beat the side from Westhoughton, near Bolton, 2-1 thanks to goals by Craig Billington and skipper Antony Leech.

Now Ash Berry’s side, who are 10th in the First Division North, turn their attention to a run of home games, starting with Saturday’s visit of AFC Liverpool to the Stafflex Arena (3.00).

The win at Daisy Hill was the perfect pick-me-up after the controversial FA Vase second qualifying round defeat by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead, where Shelley finished with nine men, James Bootland and Nathan Addy being red carded, and lost 2-1.

At Daisy Hill, Shelley made a strong start and took a 10th -minute lead when Billington fired in his eighth goal of the campaign with an accurate angled shot.

As the home side found their feet, they created some attacking momentum and levelled in the 17th minute through Ryan Farnworth, whose shot squirmed through the grasp of Max Dearnley.

Shelley’s goalkeeper might have been beaten on that occasion, but he pulled off an excellent penalty save from Jack Iley in the 39 th minute.

Two minutes later, Josimar Bradshaw had a close-range effort disallowed for offside.

But there was nothing wrong with Leech’s 55 th -minute winner, forced home by defender Leech after good build-up play by tricky wideman Matty Waller.

Billington came close with an overhead kick, while substitute Brice Pouamoun had a shot saved as Shelley sought a third.

Daisy Hill fought hard for a goal themselves, and Berry will have been pleased at the way his team dealt with the late pressure.
