Leading Huddersfield club Newsome are celebrating after winning the West Riding County Amateur League First Division title - at the first attempt.

Former Huddersfield Town player Dwayne Mattis’s side are also through to the First Division Cup final against Holmfirth Town at Overthorpe on Wednesday, May 18.

Newsome, who moved up from the Huddersfield District League last year, sealed the Taylor’s Timber-sponsored championship with a game to go, at home to Ventus-Yeadon Celtic on Saturday.

The Primrose Hill-based side beat Campion Reserves 4-1 to go two points clear of Huddersfield rivals DRAM Community, who have played all their games.

Joel Bryce (2), Anthony Haigh and Paul Pyke scored.

Now Newsome, who won the District League title in both 2014 and 2015, will mix it with the likes of Huddersfield YMCA and Lepton Highlanders, who have fought it out for this season’s Premier Division crown.

YM can clinch it with a win at Golcar United on Wednesday.

Newsome manager Mattis, 34, was born in Huddersfield and came through Town’s academy.

He made 79 appearances and won Republic of Ireland Under 21 honours before joining Bury in 2004.

Mattis later played for Barnsley, Walsall, Chesterfield, with whom he won the 2011 League II title, and Macclesfield Town, amassing 330 appearances at club level.

This is his first managerial post.
