Honley High School’s Year 9 team have been getting a helping hand as they prepare for a big match in Reading.

The team have reached the final of the English Schools Under 14 Cup and they will face Northampton School for Boys at the Madejski Stadium next Tuesday.

As well as attracting plenty of media attention, the team and PE master Noel O’Connor have also been helped by the arrival of Huddersfield Town’s community coaches, who have joined the players for a few training sessions.

Former Barnsley, Bradford and Southampton coach Steve Gates has coached the team, with the squad including Alex Wright, Nathan Beaumont, Johnathon Woodall, Jack Bland, Tyreke Dewar-Moodie, Adam Page, Tom Yarwood, Isaac Dyson, Cameron McGrath, James Rawlinson, Jordan Williams, George Sykes-Kenworthy, Alfie Copley and James Sunderland.

It has been a long trip for Honley as they won their way through to the final with victories over North Chadderton High (9-2), Newall Green High (9-3), Denton Community College (8-1), Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar (9-1), St Aidan’s CE High (3-1), Wilmslow High (5-2) and Childwell Sports and Science Academy (13-4) in the opening rounds.

In the quarter-finals they were 3-1 winners against Sheffield’s Ecclesfield School before knocking out Malet Lambert, from Hull, 4-2 in the last four.

And the Honley High teams have enjoyed success at other age groups with their Year 10 team winning the Huddersfield Schools League, as well as the cup and five-a-side crown.
