Honley claimed their second league championship in three seasons with a last day 3-1 victory over Salts in Keighley to secure the West Riding County Amateur League’s second division crown.

Having been 10 points adrift of Gildersome Spurs with four games remaining, the task looked steep.

However, with momentum behind them, Honley managed to overturn the odds and take top spot for the first time this season.

The Honley squad achieved success with the least goals conceded – just 18 – of any West Riding, or Huddersfield are Saturday or Sunday league team and having won 17 of their 20 league games.

Salts opened the scoring on 30 minutes when Honley failed to clear a deep free-kick and a Salts striker out jumped Cotterill to plant his looping header over Robinson.

Honley responded on 37 when Matthew Sykes showed some silky skills in the corner, popping the ball through his opponents legs before delivering a pinpoint cross for the ever reliable John Elliott to head home.

They took the lead on 43 through a fine solo effort from Dylan Brett.

Picking the ball up wide right, he went inside three challenges and unleashed a low left footed drive that found the corner of the net.

In the second half Brett had two glorious headed chances but on each occasion couldn’t keep his attempts from sailing over the bar.

Ben Lindley put a six-yard chance wide before Richard Cooper extended his teams lead.

The Salts keeper failed to hold a corner and Cooper gleefully ran onto the loose ball and smashed it home.

Honley have now celebrated two cup finals and two league titles under the guidance of manager Richard Bray and his assistant Andrew Scotcher who have had three seasons in charge.
