Huddersfield Town Ladies progressed to the quarter-finals of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup with a convincing 16-2 win away at Sheffield Wednesday Ladies Reserves.

Town went ahead after four minutes when Alice Linsell scored but Town’s wake up call came in the 11th minute when Wednesday scored a break away goal to level.

Two minutes later Debbie Hastings played in Kate Mallin to restore the lead and then Hastings netted before Alana Fuller made it four inside 20 minutes.

Town were wasteful in front of goal with scoring opportunities going begging and on 27 minutes Wednesday broke free again to drag the score back to 4-2.

Emily Heckler scored in the 35th minute with a strong shot and then in the 40th minute Mallin scored her second from the penalty spot after a handball decision went Town’s way.

Goals from Abbie Mullen and Hastings late in the half made the tally 8-2 in Town’s favour at the break.

Mallin scored the first goal of the second to complete her hat trick, but Town then struggled to take further chances.

It was player of the match Mallin who started another goal rush when she put Town 10-2 up in the 65th minute.

Hastings then completed her hat trick a minute later and second half substitute Shauna Messenger made it 12 goals in the 71st minute.

Mallin struck again in the 73rd, 75th and 87th minutes to make it 15 before the other second half substitute Jodie Berry completed the scoring with a minute of the game remaining.

Town face the daunting task of taking on Premier North league leaders Sheffield FC Ladies in the quarter finals, but on Sunday they return to league action when they entertain Wakefield Ladies (Storthes Hall, 2.00).

Town’s Reserves had their match postponed, but on Sunday they entertain Newcastle United Reserves (Storthes Hall, 2.00).

The was no match for the Under 16 side and they travel to Doncaster Belles on Saturday to compete in the League Cup semi-finals (11.00).

Town’s Under 14 outfit enjoyed a narrow derby victory as they beat Barnsley 1-0.

The clash was supposed to be a home outing but with Grange Moor waterlogged, the match was switched to Barnsley.

The game was ruined by a gale and Town had to battled hard for their win.

Changes in formation were necessary as Town had three defenders missing and as a consequence 3-5-2 was adopted with Lauren Bullock dropping back into midfield.

Playing with the slope and the wind in the first half Town had the majority of the possession, but were denied by a good solid Barnsley defence.

Town also struggled as their attackers strayed off side far too often.

Early Town chances came and went as Laura Walker had a header from a Tara Duce corner cleared off the line, and Duce had a chance from the edge of the area, while and Amy Broomhead just failed to get a touch on a flick from another Duce corner.

The only goal of the game came on 28 minutes when Walker lofted a ball into the box for Broomhead to race onto and score, but just before the goal Barnsley had a good chance but were denied by Isobel Pare in the Town goal, who came off her line quickly to smother a shot.

Barnsley had the majority of the play in the second half, but in reality they never created a clear cut scoring opportunity by Town’s defence of Rose Priestley, Jodie Lodge and Walker.

They were helped by good work from midfield by Bullock and Faye Allen, who were jointly awarded player of the match, plus Lauryn Smith, Duce and Eleanor Smith, who all covered a lot of ground and managed to cope with everything that Barnsley tried.

Ellie Womersley had Town’s best chance of the second half when her pace took her away from the defence and round the keeper but she was unable to finish from a tight angle.

The victory extends Town’s winning run to nine games ahead of their League Cup semi-final against Wickersley.

That tie will be played on Saturday at home (Storthes Hall, 11.00).

The Under 12 side had no game, but on Saturday are at home to Sheffield United Community Ladies (Grange Moor, 10.30).
