Huddersfield Town Ladies made the second round of the FA Women’s Cup with a 6-1 victory at Chorley Ladies.

But Brighouse Town Ladies were knocked out of the prestigious competition when they went down 2-1 at Whitley Bay.

Underdogs Brighouse, with Sonni Sweeney impressive, put in a brave display.

They trailed at half-time, but Sweeney levelled from the penalty spot and came close to putting them ahead before Whitley Bay’s winner.

At Chorley, the home side forced the early pace, but it was Town who took the lead when Kate Mallin laid the ball back to Alice Linsell, who struck an unstoppable shot from outside the area.

Town keeper Charlotte Oates made a string of sharp saves, but after half an hour, a defensive lapse allowed Chorley to level.

The first half had been evenly matched, and the second started that way, with Debbie Hastings heading over before Oates made another excellent save.

Town regained the lead through substitute Dominique Balmond, who finished off good work by Laura Windle, Hastings and Katie Nutter.

Emily Heckler took advantage of poor Chorley passing to put Town 3-1 up, then in the 68th minute, grabbed her second after a nice passing move between Linsell and Vicky Abbott.

Shauna Messenger made no mistake when teed up by Heckler, then Alarna Fuller’s free-kick forced an own goal.

Town return to Chorley this Sunday for a Northern Women’s Combination clash.

Town’s second string went down 5-2 in their FA Women’s Premier League Reserve Northern Division clash at home to Bradford City.

Jodie Berry and Laura Porritt scored for Town, who are without a game this weekend.

The Under 16s, who didn't play this weekend, have a Sheffield & Hallamshire Girls’ League game at Aston Swallownest (11.00).

The Under 14s were 8-0 winners at Sheffield Ladies to stay top of their division.

The first half was scrappy, but Town took a 13th-minute lead through Rose Priestley, then Tara Duce’s long-range effort came back off a post for Lauren Bullock to steer in the rebound.

Keeper Isobel Pare made a good save to protect the two-goal advantage.

Town were far slicker in the second half, with player of the match Isobel Boothroyd dominant in defence.

Olivia Bennett chipped in and Lauryn Smith finished well from a tight angle for her first goal of the season.

Amy Broomhead shot in after another Smith effort was saved, then Bennett profited from good work by Laura Walker, Eleanor Smith and Broomhead.

Duce and Priestley completed the scoring for Town, who face Barnsley Ladies at Grange Moor on Saturday (10.30).
