Huddersfield Town Ladies Under 13 team produced their best performance of the season so far to go five points clear at the top of their Sheffield and Hallamshire Girls League division.

With none of the club’s other sides in action, they were in the spotlight, and responded with a 7-1 victory at Dronfield Town.

Town started strongly and it took them only five minutes to go ahead.

Alicia Marriott played the ball back to Brodie Haigh on the edge of the box and her strong shot flew in.

Town knew the danger from Dronfield would come through striker Emily Barker, and she had a good chance in the 12th minute, but could only shoot wide.

Dronfield equalised as Town’s defence dithered for the only time in the game.

But in the 21st minute, Macy Ellis restored the lead from close range.

With a minute of the half remaining, Ellis again went on one of her runs from inside her own half and shot home from distance.

Straight from the restart, Marriott was gifted the ball just inside Dronfield’s half.

She ran forward and played in Courtney Livsey, who finished powerfully.

Town were dominating possession and Dronfield chances were limited.

Harriett Waller came close with a 51st-minute chance, then Molly Ellis shot over.

In the 54th minute, Marriott’s corner rebounded in off the Dronfield keeper.

With four minutes left, Livsey’s shot hit the bar and Haigh smashed home the rebound.

Olivia Burgin scored Town’s seventh with two minutes left.

Town’s defence of Lois Thornes, Sophie Jackson-Sharp, Frances Keddie and Jemima Wood, who was named player of the match, were excellent throughout.

Town head to Steel City Wanderers on Saturday (11.00).

The Under 18s are at Dronfield (10.30) while the 15s go to table-topping Doncaster Belles (11.00).

Town’s first team are in FA Women’s Premier League North Division action at Wolves on Sunday (2.00).

The seconds, whose FAWPL Reserve North Division game at Mansfield Town was postponed, host Guiseley Vixens at Storthes Hall (2.00).

Brighouse Town Ladies will head to North East Regional Women’s League leaders Barnsley on Sunday (2.00) aiming to build on a 1-0 win at Tingley Athletic in the second round of the West Riding FA Women’s Cup.

Brighouse will host Brayton Belles in the quarter-finals on Sunday, January 18.

The only other last-eight tie confirmed so far is between Bradford City and Wetherby Athletic.
