Huddersfield Town produced a battling display, but lost 2-1 in an exciting game of two own goals and one red card.

Unfortunately, 11-goal top scorer James Vaughan was the man to see red, for an 84th-minute push on Polish defender Marcin Wasilewski.

Having trailed by two at half-time, to Jamie Vardy's strike and Anthony Gerrard's own goal, Town had got themselves back into the game when Paul Knonchesky diverted in substitute Sean Scannell's shot.

The match was watched by 22,297, including 913 Town fans.

Town made three changes to the side beaten 2-1 at home to Watford in the last game before the international break.

Full-backs Calum Woods and Paul Dixon and midfielder Oscar Gobern were the men to come in, with Jazz Richards out injured and Ollie Norwood and Adam Clayton on the bench.

Former Dundee and Dundee United man Dixon was making his 300th career appearance and fifth start of the season, Woods his fourth start and Gobern has sixth.

Town had to weather some early Leicester pressure, but responded well, with James Vaughan bringing a fine save from Kasper Schmeichel with a close-range shot from Dixon's cross.

But manager Mark Robins' pre-match warning about the hosts' threat from out wide was ringing true.

Leicester went ahead in the 11th minute, when former Halifax frontman Vardy was given too much space and rifled a centre by David Nugent into the roof of the net.

Schmeichel was again called in when both Vaughan and skipper Peter Clarke lunged for a Danny Ward cross.

Town keeper Alex Smithies was in the spotlight in the 25th minute, making a great one-handed stop to thwart Nugent, who was through one-on-one.

Within seconds, play was up at the other end, and when Ward teed up Vaughan, Schmeichel again came to Leicester's rescue, beating away a strong shot.

Ward was unable to make the most of a couple of good chances before Town found themselves two down after 38 minutes.

Anthony Knockaert swung in a corner which defender Gerrard, trying to clear, could only head into his own net.

It was cruel on Town, who had been competing well and again came close when Vaughan forced Schmeichel into yet another save. Dixon tapped in the rebound, but was offside.

However Leicester finished the first half on the offensive, and Smithies did well to deny Frenchman Knockaert in stoppage time.

Town's stopper was back in action early in the second half, when he saved from Nugent (twice) and Andy King.

Town made a double substitution in the hour, Duane Holmes and Scannell for Dixon and Adam Hammill, and went to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

And Scannell, who sealed a Town  FA Cup win at this ground last season, made a quick impact, breaking forward and netting with a 67th-minute shot which took a deflection off left-back Konchesky.

The goal put a new complexion in the clash, and Leicester manager Nigel Pearson responded with a double change of his own.

Town survived a penalty claim when Gerrard threw himself in the way of substitute Matty James' shot, then came Vaughan's sending off.

But there was still time for Holmes to bring a crucial save from Schmeichel as Town made light of their numerical disadvantage to push in vain for an equaliser.
