Joe Lolley and Mustapha Carayol each scored their third goals of the season as Huddersfield Town kicked off a new year with victory for the first time since 2004.

Lolley opened the scoring with a 61st-minute shot and Carayol stepped off the bench to seal the victory in the 87th minute as David Wagner's side completed a festive haul of seven points from nine

First Half

A rejected Huddersfield Town penalty appeal was the main talking point of a goalless first half at the Macron Stadium.

The 2,000-plus travelling fans behind the goal seemed convinced Nahki Wells had been fouled by Prince-Desire Gouano in the 25th minute.

But referee Andy Haines waved play on, and to frustrate the Town supporters even further, Wells put a dangerous-looking free-kick over the bar soon after.

Bolton began the game strongly, with their best chance falling to the lively Liam Feeney, who held off Ben Chilwell to fire a shot against the left-hand post.

Joe Lolley was busy for Town, who finished the half far better than they started it.

Second Half

Wells was thwarted by Prince's block after rounding keeper Ben Amos as Town, with Jamie Paterson on for Sean Scannell, began the second half more impressively than the first.

Then home keeper Ben Amos showed good reactions to turn a Wells shot wide after he was played in by Paterson.

Amos was able to block Lolley's initial effort just after the hour mark, but was helpless as the forward drove in the rebound to put Town in front.

Bolton's Zach Clough and Town's Emyr Huws were both narrowly off target as play swung from end to end in the aftermath of the goal.

Town made sure of victory when Carayol, who had just replaced Harry Bunn, slid the ball home after Amos blocked from Huws.

Good Day

Joe Lolley marked a lively performance with his third goal of the season. And he took it well, steering the ball home after his initial effort was blocked by keeper Ben Amos.

Bad Day

Neil Lennon and his Bolton Wanderers side are up against it after this defeat.

They had hoped to build on a derby victory over Blackburn Rovers and began brightly before Town got into the game.
