Huddersfield Town remain in the relegation positions after a frustrating 2-0 defeat way at Cardiff City.

Despite a battling first half display from Town, the home side turned up the heat after the interval and continued their climb up the Championship.

Town manager Chris Powell rung the changes as he introduced his on loan talent to a team facing unbeaten opponents Cardiff City.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer, Bournemouth defender Elliott Ward and Nottingham Forest midfielder Jamie Paterson were all in the starting line-up, while Middlesbrough's Mustapha Carayol and Wigan Athletic's Emyr Huws were among the substitutes.

Dean Whitehead took the captain's armband for a Town team seeking a first win of the campaign and facing former players Lee Peltier and Anthony Pilkington and ex-loan signing Sean Morrison.

Inside two minutes Cardiff threatened with a Joe Mason break leading to a Kenwyne Jones strike on goal that Steer confidently beat way.

On 15 minutes a clash between Peltier and Jonathan Hogg left both players needing treatment, with the upshot being a yellow card for the Town player for his challenge while the Cardiff man had to be replaced by Scott Malone.

Town showed promise with two Nahki Wells attempts having to be well blocked by the Bluebirds defence, while the home side laboured to create a clear cut opening as the visitors grafted in centre midfield and defence with Whitehead playing a captain's role as half-time arrived with the contest still goalless.

Town started the second half brightly and Cardiff keeper David Marshall had to block well as Harry Bunn cut in from the left and put in a shot on target.

There was a scare on 56 minutes as Jones broke free of the Town rearguard but he shot tamely at Steer.

Hogg was withdrawn after a knock on 63 minutes giving Huws the chance to show what he can do in Town colours.

However, it was City who will building pressure and they went close when Peter Whittingham fired narrowly wide from 20 yards.

Town had a penalty claim turned down after Bunn was stopped going into the penalty area, but on 68 minutes Cardiff took the lead when Sammy Ameobi crossed for former Huddersfield player Pilkington to turn and score.

With 18 minutes remaining Powell opted for a double substitution with Carayol and Ishmael Miller coming on for Bunn and Paterson, but chances failed to fall for the visitors.

Cardiff struck the killer blow 13 minutes from time when Joe Mason netted from a narrow angle after being set up by Ameobi.
