Huddersfield Town's Under 18s put in an exceptional team performance to beat Manchester United 2-1 in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup tonight.

The victory, which was watched by 1,385 at the John Smith’s – including United legend Sir Bobby Charlton and Town boss Mark Robins – sets up a quarter-final tie away at either Manchester City or Fulham.

After a slow start, Town took the lead in the 14th minute when Jake Charles and Flo Bojaj linked up to put Ben Atkinson clear.

The midfielder calmly slotted past United ‘keeper Joel Pereira.

Town continued to attack, and both Ben Hoyle and Atkinson had shots that were well saved by Pereira.

United then got an equaliser in the 25th minute through their captain James Wilson, who chased down a long ball to slam a shot past Sam Guthrie.

But, with five minutes of the first-half remaining, Town went 2-1 ahead as Jake Charles blasted home a penalty after Ben Barber was adjudged to have pulled his shirt.

United struggled to break Town down, and despite a couple of long-range efforts from the visitors, Town went into the break 2-1 up.

Kedesh Goddard wasted a golden opportunity just after the hour as he shot straight at Pereira, before Wilson went close for United –  his effort bringing a fine save from Guthrie.

Charles missed a guilt-edged chance with 10 minutes remaining, but Town defended resolutely to record a famous victory.
