Nahki Wells notched his third goal in two games to rescue a deserved point for Huddersfield Town at QPR.

Just four minutes of regular time remained when the striker drilled in a 20-yard free-kick following Daniel Tozser's foul on substitute Joe Lolley.

It was a first draw under David Wagner after the head coach had looked set to be undone by fellow German Sebastian Polter.

He came off the bench to fire the home side into an 80th minute lead when he netted from close range after a long throw. Wagner had spoken about the challenges of two games in three days and his belief in the value of squad rotation beforehand.

And true to his word, he made six changes, only one of them forced, with keeper Joe Murphy back for a first appearance in seven matches after the end of Jed Steer's latest loan from Aston Villa.

Jason Davidson was preferred to on-loan Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell, the Australian international playing for the first time in eight in his first outing under Wagner.

Centre-back Martin Cranie and forwards Muzzy Carayol, Jamie Paterson and Harry Bunn came in for Joel Lynch, Sean Scannell, Kyle Dempsey and Lolley.

QPR were again missing 10-goal top scorer Charlie Austin, ruled out by a hamstring injury, and left Polter on the bench.

The first half proved frustrating for both sets of fans, Town's because their team were unable to take advantage of plenty of possession, and the home faithful because of a lack of attacking play.

The home side forced three corners in succession early on, the last of which was confidently gathered by Murphy, but otherwise struggled to create any genuine chances.

Indeed there were sarcastic cheers when Matt Phillips, playing up front rather than on the right flank, finally took aim in the 39th minute, his shot from the edge of the area going well wide.

Rob Green, still keeping former Town keeper Alex Smithies out of the QPR team, was the busier of the two stoppers, even if he was well protected by two solid banks of four in front of him.

He held an Emyr Huws shot as Nahki Wells lurked menacingly in case of a ricochet, then clutched Wells header from a cross by Davidson, who had earlier shot wide from distance.

Bunn's persistence set up Wells in the 29th minute, but Green gathered his angled effort when a cross towards Carayol might have been the
better option.

QPR's Canadian wideman Junior Hoilett out a couple of shots narrowly off target just before the break, but there were still boos from the
home sections of Loftus Road at the break.

Town supporters might well have been surprised when Wagner sent out the same 11 for the second half, after making changes after the first 45 minutes in each of the previous four games.

He did make two substitutions on the hour, replacing Davidson and Carayol with Chilwell and Lolley.
QPR should really have been ahead by that stage, but Murphy pulled off a fine save from close range to prevent Phiilips converting a Paul Konchesky cross.

Bunn blazed a presentable opportunity far too high before Paterson headed over from a Chilwell centre.
It proved to be Paterson's final touch of the game as he was replaced by Scannell in Town's final change in the 73rd minute.

QPR had brought on Polter for Brazilian midfielder Sandro by this stage, and he finally had the home supporters cheering when he netted.
But defeat would have been tough on Town, whose 862 travelling fans got a great view of Wells' eighth goal of the season.
