AFC EMLEY go into tonight’s FA Cup extra preliminary round clash at home to Hall Road Rangers buoyed by a first win of the Northern Counties East League campaign.

Scott Holt’s first-half double laid the foundations for a 4-0 First Division victory over Appleby Frodingham at Scunthorpe.

John Cyrus and Curtis Roberts got the other goals in Emley’s fourth match of the campaign.

The first decent chance fell to Emley’s Jamie Arundel who did well to control a dinked ball over the defence from Roberts, beat a defender and force a good save from Samir Own.

Thomas Finnigan looked Frodingham’s most dangerous outlet, getting himself into good positions only to shoot off target.

Dave Heagney had a goal ruled out for offside as Emley took a grip on the game, with Josh Ingham and Cyrus solid in midfield.

Darren Hepworth’s side went ahead on 25 minutes when Roberts chipped over the defence for Holt to finish.

Heagney hit the side-netting before the second arrived after 42 minutes, when Mick Amos crossed for Holt to drill home a fierce volley.

The home team attacked strongly at the start of the second half, but Emley absorbed the pressure before hitting back.

Roberts glided through the defence only for his shot to be blocked on the line after 55 minutes.

However Cyrus made it 3-0 from the resultant corner, heading home powerfully.

Cyrus headed against a post 10 minutes later before in the 80th minute, gaining possession and playing a neat one-two with Heagney to surge into the box and head against the woodwork, with Roberts on hand to finish.

Gavin Armitage twice came close to a fifth, with his first effort saved and his second hitting a post.

Amazingly, Cyrus then hit an upright for the third time, having been set up for his shot by Mark Stuart.

Emley will now try to take the positives into tonight’s cup-tie (7.45).

It will be a tough test, because Hull-based Hall Road have made a strong start to the season with two Premier Division wins from as many games.

They also won at Bridlington in the League Cup.
