BUSY midfielder Adnan Ahmed scored a cracking goal as Town's second string ended their five-match losing streak with a hard-earned Pontin's League point.
The 19-year-old Academy graduate pounced with a crisp, low left-foot drive on 26 minutes after United had failed to deal with Jon Newby's probing pass down the left.
It gave John Dungworth's side the platform to challenge for a first win since September 24, but United eventually ended those hopes 15 minutes from time with a close-range header from substitute Jake Speight amid heavy pressure.
Town, in fact, had been fortunate to preserve their lead only five minutes before that when former Blade Tyrone Thompson cleared pff the line after goalkeeper Jacob Giles could only parry a fierce low shot from Colin Marrison.
At that stage, the visitors were well on top, with Ian Ross taking charge in midfield and the powerful Ashley Sestanovich - who teed up the equaliser - creating plenty of danger down the right flank.
Town's best approach play had come in the first half, despite the loss of Lee Fowler to ankle and groin niggles after only 25 minutes.
After taking time to settle - Giles made a smart save from Evan Horwood at close quarters in only the third minute - Town started to string some moves together and Newby (when he could avoid the offside trap) showed some neat touches.
He almost sent Ahmed clear with a backheel on 15 minutes, when the midfielder's shot was blocked, and then goalkeeper Kristian Rogers parried a well-struck cross-shot by the former Bury striker.
Newby was involved again when squaring a Chris Holland pass into the path of John Thorrington with 37 minutes on the clock, but Rogers was off his line smartly to make the block and prevent Town going two ahead.
Sestanovich, who played on loan for Scarborough in their FA Cup clash with Chelsea, tested Giles just before the break, seeing his shot neatly blocked by the goalkeeper, and that set the tone for the second half.
At the back, David Mirfin was excellent for Town, making a couple of outstanding tackles, and Paul Scott joined the party late on with a vital clearance from near the line. Substitute John McCombe dealt nicely with a late attack.
Town: Giles, Thompson, Edwards, Fowler (Collins, 25mins), Mirfin, Scott, Mattis, Holland, Newby, Thorrington (McCombe, 81mins), Ahmed. Subs not used: Draper, Caulfield, Walls.
