AIDEN CHIPPENDALE scored a terrific double as Town’s young Reserve side impressively toppled a much more experienced Leeds United 3-1 last night.

The talented teenage winger pounced after nine and 58 minutes as Paul Stephenson’s side took control of the totesport.com League Division I East fixture.

And, while USA international Mike Grella pulled one back for Leeds with 17 minutes left, substitute Stephen Powell wrapped things up for Town in stoppage time to reward a frozen Galpharm crowd of 271.

Considering Leeds had a massive advantage in terms of experience and featured trialist Paul Dickov up front alongside Tresor Kandol, Town played excellently and thoroughly deserved the victory.

Chippendale’s opener, after Chris Atkinson had won possession in midfield, summed up much about the display because his 25-yard angled drive from the left was simply unstoppable as it dipped into the far side netting.

Keeper Mathis Esterhazy (also on trial) made a fine stop to deny Chippendale a second on 18 minutes, while at the other end skipper Leigh Franks and centre-back partner Spencer Harris made sure Leeds didn’t benefit from the promptings of Grella and Andy Robinson.

Taser Hassan and Jack Hunt (above) both did well for Town down the right while combative midfielder Lewis Nightingale might have added a second just before half time if his final touch into the box had not been so strong.

Hunt made an excellent goalline clearance to prevent Grella netting an equaliser eight minutes into the second half and then Chippendale got a crucial strike, two minutes before the hour, when he nodded home a fine cross by Hassan, who showed some bright touches.

Frontmen James Spencer and Michael McCaffery continued to put Leeds under pressure, with Liam Ridehalgh joining attacks down the left, but it was Hunt who went closest with a blazing drive after McCaffery and Hassan had been involved.

Grella’s goal might have signalled a late flurry from Leeds, but Town stuck to their guns and they were rewarded in the second minute of added time when keeper Esterhazy dropped a Chippendale cross and Powell pounced from close range.

Town – Allinson, Hunt, Ridehalgh, Atkinson, Franks, Harris, Hassan (Powell 83), Nightingale (Watson 63), Spencer, McCaffery (Birtles 73), Chippendale. Subs not used: Bower, Field.
