BAY Athletic blew they West Riding County Amateur League title chase wide open with a stunning 5-1 win at leaders Albion Sports.

The Bradford side have been a big hit in the top flight after winning promotion last season.

But on Saturday, they were no match for their Huddersfield visitors, who are chasing a third successive title and a fourth in five years.

Kitson Gayle, right, grabbed a hat trick and Brighton Mugadza and Nick Jagger were also on target for Bay, who are fourth, five points adrift of Albion but with three games in hand.

Bay’s victory allowed second-placed Wibsey to move level on 41 points with Albion thanks to a 1-1 draw at Meltham, who had Adam Mathews on target.

Marsden could have become the third side on 41 points, but were held 3-3 by Ovenden WR at Fall Lane, where Jason Battye scored twice and Chris Cornelly got the other.

Golcar United fought out a 1-1 draw at Tyersal thanks to Gary Holmes.

At the foot of the table, second-bottom Kirkburton remain in trouble after a 1-0 defeat at Campion, but Storthes Hall continued their climb away from danger.

They romped to a 5-0 win at basement side Halifax Irish, although they had a scare after only six minutes, when keeper John Sykes was beaten by a lob which hit an upright.

The Huddersfield side went ahead after 13 minutes when Richard Lally hit an excellent first-time shot from 20 yards into the top corner.

On 26 minutes, Lally broke down the right and while keeper Matt Townsend parried his low drive, Matt Mulvihill fired the rebound into an empty net.

Mulvihill grabbed his seconds on 39 minutes, when he headed home from Andy Haigh’s free-kick, and completed his hat trick on 65, with a rocket shot into the roof of the net.

The fifth goal came after 84 minutes, when Michael Tunnacliffe reacted fastest to force the ball home after Danny Langfield’s shot was tipped away.

Bay Athletic Reserves suffered their first defeat in Division II, going down 3-0 at home to fourth-placed Campion.

But Huddersfield rivals Storthes Hall Reserves did them a big favour by beating second-placed Westbrook YMCA 1-0 with a goal by Alistair Townsley.

Third-placed AFC Emley stayed in contention at the top with a 1-0 home win over Rawdon Old Boys clinched by Ben Dunne.
