GOLCAR United are targeting former Town striker John McAliskey after making a trio of signings topped by former German professional Roy Stamer.

The 30-year-old left winger has experience with Werder Bremen, Bochum and Wattenscheid in his home country.

After moving to England, he turned out for Bradford Park Avenue, Harrogate Town and Farsley, and will now operate in the West Riding County Amateur League Premier Division.

While ambitious Golcar are in talks with McAliskey, who was with Town from 2003-07 and played for the Republic of Ireland Under 21s, they have signed defender Carl Sykes from neighbours Marsden and midfielder Carl Robinson from Winterton Rangers.

Robinson will take the captain’s armband with club secretary Peter Gledhill explaining: “The intention is to strengthen the spine of the side.

“We’re really pleased with the signings so far, and while Roy will grab the headlines because of his achievements in Germany, we believe the two Carls will also prove good acquisitions.

“Hopefully we can get John McAliskey on board as well, and with him coming from the village and having played junior football here, he understands what we’re about.”

Golcar, who have a long-term lease on their Longfield Avenue ground, won the Premier Division title in 2005, but in more recent seasons, have been in the bottom half of a division dominated by Huddersfield rivals Bay Athletic.

“Last summer the focus was on setting up our Works League side, to give us three open-age teams and help maintain our village identity, and they had an excellent first season, winning promotion as Division II champions,” added Gledhill.

“This summer, we wanted to build up our first team, and while we know we’re in for a tough challenge, because the standard in the Premier Division is getting better all the time, we aim to be more of a top than bottom-half side.

“We’ve got a good structure, having set up a base at the Rose and Crown pub in the village and done work on the ground with the help of Kirklees Council, and now we want some improvement on the pitch.”

Elite Taxis, The Weavers Shed and Skye Direct Business Supplies are among the latest firms to back Golcar, who are selling pitchside advertising boards (contact Ben on 07825 744829 for details).
