HEYWOOD Irish Centre are hoping to fill in a notable gap on their CV at the Galpharm Stadium tonight (7.00).

The club launch a spell of five finals in 19 days – they play Saturday and Sunday football – by taking on Meltham in the District League’s showpiece Barlow Cup final.

Heywoods have never won the famous old trophy, but they hope to put that right with a full-strength team featuring several members of their side which did so well in the FA Carlsberg Sunday Cup.

Darren Henighan, their leading scorer with 22 goals, is one of those, as is 16-goal Matt Jaggar and Matt Tattersley, who has scored 14 this season.

Kevin Ashe, Chris Keady, Jamie Waller and Josh Williams have also seen Sunday action in the top competition and hope to do the business for manager Carl Marriott and assistant John Morris.

Heywoods, who will be favourites after beating Meltham home and away in the league this season, beat Diggle 4-2, Kirkheaton 1-0 and Netherton 2-0 to reach the semi-finals, where they defeated Hepworth 3-1.

They are renowned for playing a passing game, as are Meltham – so it promises to be an entertaining final.

Meltham are without midfield kingpin Chris North, who has moved away for work reasons, but manager Tony Bradley and assistant Steve Lamb otherwise have a fully-fit squad to select from.

Meltham, who had won five on the trot before losing last weekend, beat Uppermill 2-1, Britannia Sports 2-0 and Lamb Inn 4-2 to reach the semis, where they defeated Honley 3-1.

Meltham are aiming to record their first Barlow win since a hat trick of victories was completed in 2005 (coincidentally against Heywoods).
