THE two teams with 100% records in Division II met higher opposition in the Huddersfield FA Challenge Cup with local pride at stake – and one won while the other went down in honourable fashion.

Kirkheaton Rovers met rivals Moldgreen, who are well placed in Division I, but it was the Second Division side that won 2-0.

In an even contest, Rob Holroyd set up Oliver Storrie for the first goal in the 20th minute.

Rovers then had to work hard to keep a clean sheet with central defenders Dale Harris and Luke Walbanks having fine games, but it was keeper Mick Madigan who was the man of the match.

The game was still in the balance until Holroyd finished off a fine move to make it 2-0 10 minutes from time.

In the other game, the Dolphins were denied derby delight.

Royal Dolphins (Milnsbridge) met County Amateur neighbours Golcar United in a match that the latter won on penalties.

The game ended 6-6 after extra-time and Golcar were never in front until they took the first penalty in the shootout.

The Dolphins took the lead after 15 minutes when John McAlliskey scored from a free-kick but the lead lasted only three minutes.

McAlliskey scored his second from another set piece and he completed his hat trick in the first 30 minutes with a spectacular 30-yard volley.

Five minutes later it was 3-2 when Golcar converted a free kick and, just before the break, Golcar equalised.

From the restart, Shaun Quinn reacted quickest to a cross from the right to give the Dolphins a 4-3 half-time lead.

Early in the second period, Golcar were on top and some good interplay led to the goal that made it 4-4.

Dolphins were not overawed and took the lead again. This time it was Liam King who ran on to a flicked ball and fired into the top corner from the edge of the box.

With 15 minutes to play, Dolphins just needed to hold on, but injured keeper James Allen had to be replaced by midfielder Michael McCabe.

As the final whistle loomed, Dolphins looked to be going through but were denied by another Golcar equaliser in the sixth minute of added time.

With all of Dolphins substitutes used and a couple of players suffering from injuries, their supporters feared the worst.

The luck seemed to be against them, especially when Michael King beat the offside trap but his effort hit the inside of a post and rolled across the face of the goal, but Liam King then headed the Dolphins back in front.

In the second period of extra-time, Golcar poured forward but could have gone further behind as, on the break, a Wayne Shooter effort struck the woodwork.

Golcar’s influential Roy Stammer broke the hearts of the Dolphin supporters when he scored from an acute angle with just a minute left on the clock.

It was a fine save from the Golcar keeper to stop the 14th penalty which give his side victory, but it was a day the Dolphins won’t forget.

In another District League v County Am tie, District League Slaithwaite United beat YMCA 3-1. This was Slawit’s third cup win in three weeks following two wins in the West Riding Trophy. The District League side were on top from the start with Howes in the centre of midfield being outstanding.

Chadwick gave Slaithwaite the lead in the 23rd minute when he just beat the keeper to the ball and his header looped into the net.

Ten minutes later it was 2-0. Howes put Shaw through but a tackle by a YMCA defender sent the ball past his own keeper.

YMCA then had a spell of pressure and were unlucky not to pull one back. In one attack, they hit the bar three times only for the fourth attempt to be cleared off the line.

Ashley Scott secured the game when he ran onto keeper Rowbottom’s long clearance to make it 3-0. YMCA scored a consolation goal four minutes from time.

Three clubs had to thank hat tricks for progressing to the next round.

Dalton Crusaders beat HV Academicals 3-2 courtesy of a Wilkinson treble, while at Lindley Liberal Club, Meltham won by the same score with Midgley scoring all three. Holmbridge had a slightly easier 3-1 win over Cumberworth, but they had to rely on a Short hat trick.
