NEW manager Chris Haigh was highly delighted with the Huddersfield FA Minor team’s performance in their first match in the West Riding Minor Cup as they coasted to an impressive 5-0 win over Halifax.

Huddersfield’s keeper Paul Day got down well to save as early as the sixth minute and the initial exchanges didn’t suggest the comfortable win that was to come the way of the Huddersfield side.

On 10 minutes Huddersfield took the lead when a throw in fell to Iwan Hanley-Heeley, who back-heeled the ball to Josh Shields to tap it in from two yards.

The pace of the two Huddersfield forwards, Hanley-Heeley and Shields, and the work of the two wide men, Elliot Chambers and Mark McSherry, was proving too much for the Halifax defence and three goals in eight minutes ensured victory for Huddersfield.

On 24 minutes, a McSherry cross was headed home by Hanley-Heeley, four minutes later, Hanley-Heeley proved too strong for his marker before side-footing home from 10 yards and, another four minutes later, Shields side-footed in from 12 yards.

Within 30 seconds of the restart, it was 5-0 with another from Shields.

There were no more goals but Ashley Crowther worked tirelessly in midfield and was man-of-the-match while his midfield partner, Lee Torczynowycz, must still be wondering how he didn’t add to the scoring as his 20-yard fiercely struck shot was brilliantly saved by the Halifax keeper.

The clean sheet was the result of the solid pairing in central defence of Josh Langfield and Jack Garrety, with the help of full backs Lee Johnson and Luke Eastwood.

Goalkeeper Paul Day was not tested much but he was efficient in his work (especially his throwing to the full backs) and his confidence spurred the rest of the defence.

The Minors next take on Goole on Sunday, November 16.

There were two big Huddersfield derbies in the West Riding County Amateur League, with Golcar United and Bay Athletic both achieving bragging rights over Storthes Hall and Meltham Athletic respectively.

Bay carved out a 2-0 lead on their travels to Meltham and goals by Andrew McLoughlin (2), Barry Howe, Adam Bell, John Buckley and Kitson Gayle ensured Bay stayed firmly at the top of the Premier Division. Jonathon Newiss replied with a brace for Meltham.

A brace each for Kieran Ryan and Danny Senior gave Golcar United victory against rivals Hall at Longfield Avenue.

United were 2-0 up at the break but Hall tried to play their way back into the game and Golcar were indebted to Dan Konyk, who produced an outstanding save from Michael Tunnacliffe on 61 minutes.

United went 4-0 up before Rob Morris rose to head in Jamie Miller’s cross for a late consolation.
