THERE’S a new competition under way in the Learner Driver Training Centre Sunday League.

The seven member clubs voted recently to play each other only twice in the actual league.

However, to prevent the season from petering out too early, they also agreed for a voluntary supplementary competition to take place.

This involves each team playing each other once on a league basis with the top two playing off for the Armitage Leisure Trophy.

Apart from Huddersfield Irish Centre, the other six teams have entered plus Lloyds OB (the former TSB team which played several years ago and have reformed to play on an occasional basis).

After a seven-week break, fixtures resumed in the Rollinson Cup first round.

Barge Albion, from Division I of the Kirklees Sunday League, managed a 2-1 victory over Division II side Helion thanks to goals from Salm and Addy, Stephenson netting for Helion.

High-fliers Black Bull Shepley also overcame Division II opponents in Walpole Community 6-3. There were hat tricks for Thorp and Sykes for Bull and Jordan for Walpole.

The tie between Sunday League clubs Marsh FC and Leeds Road Wanderers ended in a resounding 8-1 win for Marsh, after they had led 3-0 at the break.

On target for the winners were Inman (2), Hamsmalih (2), Webster, Ben Roys, Robinson and Stratford. Dale Joy got Wanderers’ only strike.

Lloyds OB also entered this competition and took on KSL Division II basement side Wellington B.

Wellington took the lead just before half-time through Afsar, but very early in the second half Lloyds equalised, with giant striker Gareth Mann on target.

Not to be outdone, another of the original Lloyds side, Mark Houchen, was first to a loose ball in the area to prod home a second.

With only minutes left on the clock Wellington struck back as Reed rifled the ball into the net. However the ‘old men’ of Lloyds did it again, literally from the kick-off, as Houchen produced a repeat performance which put the tired OBs into round two.

In Division I, Rose and Crown took advantage of Golcar Con’s postponement to go top with a 3-1 win against Club Kirkheaton.

John Martin, Luke Haigh and Liam Madigan claimed the goals with a reply from Marcus Burton.

Huddersfield Irish Centre lost 5-3 at Oyster Martyrs in the Carlsberg Sunday Cup.
