SHEPLEY won the penalty prize against Lepton in the big FA Challenge Cup clash.

It was second against third from Division I and, not surprisingly, it was close.

After extra-time it was all square at 2-2 and it was still close in the shoot-out, Shepley edging it 5-4 in what proved to be a thrilling climax to an excellent afternoon of entertainment.

Shepley edged the first half of the match and took the lead when a long throw-in was headed home by Dean Horn.

In the second period it was Lepton’s turn to do most of the attacking and this resulted in Ashley Flynn grabbing the equaliser and sending the tie into extra-time.

Lepton then went ahead with another Flynn goal and it remained 2-1 as added time in extra-time began.

Shepley gained a series of three corners and, from the last one, their keeper (who had gone up) got his head to the ball and in the following scramble, defender Richard Peel forced the ball over the line.

Shepley took the first penalty and after nine had been taken, it was 5-4 to Shepley.

How ironic then that the man that scored both Lepton’s goals, Ashley Flynn, was the man to miss the vital kick.

Shepley have now reached the last eight along with Newsome WMC, who beat Division III opposition in Linthwaite Athletic, and County Amateur sides Marsden and Bay Athletic.

In previous weeks, Lamb Inn Golcar and YMCA had already reached the same stage.

Moldgreen, courtesy of a 5-2 win over Heywood Irish, are now out of the relegation places.

It was 2-2 at half time as O’Connor and Henighan had given Heywoods the lead twice, but on both occasions, Matthew Noble equalised.

In the second half, Pat Hoyer put Moldgreen ahead for the first time and then James McDonagh scored the best goal of the game when he chipped the keeper from fully 30 yards out.

At 4-2 down, Heywoods threw caution to the wind but were caught on the break by another Hoyer goal.

In the other two Division I matches, goals were at a premium.

Diggle’s solitary goal earned them three points at home to Uppermill while Cumberworth and Meltham shared a rare goalless draw.

In Division II, the Skelmanthorpe players will be on “free drinks” when they are in the Berry Brow and Netherton areas.

Skelmanthorpe beat Lamb Inn 2-1. The Birkby-based side still have eight matches to play and plenty to play for, but they are now relying on the others to drop points.

All the goals came in the first period. Joe Pinnock gave Skelmanthorpe the lead but that was shortlived. They took the lead for the second time when Ryan Jagger scrambled the ball home.

In the second half, it could have gone either way as both sides had plenty of chances.

This result leaves Lamb Inn four points adrift of Brow, who have played one game fewer. Netherton are a point behind Lamb but have four games in hand.

Division IV matters will soon be drawing to a conclusion because the top two keep on winning while of the four below them, three of them dropped points while the other was in cup action.

Shelley had another high-scoring win with a 6-2 defeat of Fenay Bridge. Second-placed Heyside almost matched the leaders in a 5-2 win at Rastrick. Shelley need just three points to guarantee promotion.
