A LAST minute penalty from Tom Mathews booked Meltham Athletic their place in the last eight of the West Riding Cup with a narrow 2-1 home win over Leeds City.
The WRCA League Premier Division rivals played out a cagey opening 20 minutes before home team Meltham began to take control.
Chris Brammall led the way with some good approach play that led to strike partner Tom Mathews going close on numerous occasions.
The return of Paul Hutson in midfield ensured that Meltham dominated the first half and it was no surprise when Tom Mathews jinked his way through the City defence to give his side a deserved 1-0 half-time lead.
The second period was dominated by the visitors and Tom Shaw and his defence had to be on top form to keep City out – Sam Wardle was again in top form and player-manager Brammall was man-of-the-match.
The pressure finally told on 75 minutes when an excellent move ended with Leeds drawing level.
The contest looked to be heading for extra time, but a Leeds player handled the ball to give Meltham a last minute penalty. Tom Mathews cooly sent the keeper the wrong way to hand Athletic a quarter-final tie away to Tyresal.
