David Edgar's arrival at Huddersfield Town looks set to accelerate Anthony Gerrard’s departure.

The 28-year-old centre-back has made only one start and three substitute appearances since returning from a calf injury picked up in pre-season.

Edgar, who is on loan from Championship rivals Birmingham City, can play centre-back, full-back or in midfield.

Town also have skipper Mark Hudson, Joel Lynch, Tommy Smith, Murray Wallace and Lee Peltier as central defensive options.

Peltier has been linked with a switch to Cardiff City, Gerrard’s former club.

And Gerrard has been rumoured to be a target of Preston North End and Major League soccer in the USA.

“Anthony and I have spoken,” said Town manager Chris Powell.

“His contract is up at end of season and he hasn’t managed to get into the team since returning from injury.

“We have talked about him moving on, either on loan or permanently.

“He has expressed an interest to go and play regularly somewhere and I have told him I am receptive to that.

“He has had his injury problems, but he has got back and he’s fine.

If someone picks up the phone and the deal is right for all concerned, we will do it.”

Liverpudlian Gerrard, who played in Tuesday’s development game against Derby County, started his career at Everton.

He joined Walsall during the 2005 close-season after a loan spell at the West Midlands club and moved to Cardiff in 2009.

He spent the 2010-11 season on loan to Hull City and featured in Cardiff’s 2012 League Cup final clash with Liverpool, facing his cousin Steven, before current Preston manager Simon Grayson brought him to Town in 2012.

Gerrard has made 91 appearances for the club, scoring twice.
