Facts

Huddersfield Town slipped to a third pre-season defeat with a disappointing 2-1 reverse at Barnsley.

Town, who had also lost 3-1 at Grimsby Town and 4-3 at Rochdale, took the lead in the 20th minute thanks to a Nahki Wells strike, but the hosts hit back when Kyle Dempsey, who set Wells up for his opener, mishit a backpass and Sam Winnall pounced to level.

And the home side completed the turnaround when Mason Holgate netted from a corner just moment into the second half.

Town team (4-4-2): Smithies; Smith (Cranie, 72), Hudson, Lynch, Davidson (Bunn, 82); Scannell (Lolley, 46), Whitehead, Butterfield, Dempsey (Hogg, 46); Miller (Vaughan, 61), Wells (Hiwula, 72). Substitutes not used: Murphy, Wallace, Boyle.

Analysis

A change of formation fails to have the desired effect - Town lined up in a 4-4-2 shape and, while there were early moments of promise, there were a few players who did not entirely convince in the formation.

Kyle Dempsey thrived initially cutting in off the left flank, but looks far more at home in the middle and Jacob Butterfield had the same problem after the former's withdrawal at the break, giving Chris Powell a few problems ahead of next weekend's trip to Hull City.

Main man

Nahki Wells - On an afternoon when few stood out, it was important to mention the Bermudian's contribution as he took his goal neatly, ran the line well and was efficient in his use of the ball.

Looks to have become a lot beefier over the summer months and is now refusing to be bullied by opposition central defenders with his strike offering an example of poise, pace, power and precision.

Bigger picture

Defensive problems continue to mount up - Town kept a clean sheet in midweek against Deportivo de La Coruna but the Spaniards' penchant for keeping the ball in attacking areas slightly skewed how Powell's defensive unit had performed.

Against teams with a gameplan of playing direct football, Town have struggled to keep a wrap on strikers such as Nathan Arnold at Grimsby, Calvin Andrew at Rochdale and Sam Winnall at Oakwell.
