SO last season was a waste of time for Town – don’t you believe it!

The 2007-08 campaign could still turn out to be one of the most significant in Town’s recent history.

Not only did the club appoint a proven manager in Stan Ternent and an experienced staff to work with him, but there were landmark changes behind the scenes which could enable Town to progress massively as they begin their second century.

Those surround the appointment of lifelong fan Dean Hoyle as chairman-elect to succeed current club owner Ken Davy, with the promise of Town becoming a potentially established force at least at Championship level.

All the background is featured in Town’s latest DVD, the Season Review for 2007-08, which is now available priced £19.99 and which features action from every match but which focuses strongly on the FA Cup heroics against Birmingham and Chelsea, in addition to the memorable home victory against arch rivals Leeds United.

“The club seemed to be struggling and I felt, having been successful in business, that I could bring something to the party,” says Hoyle, who joined Davy in offering the £100 season-tickets which have been the talk of the Coca-Cola echelons.

“I’m excited about what’s happening at the club and it’s great to be around Huddersfield Town right now.

“And while the fans know I’m one of them – a fan who has been on the terraces all his life – the fan part of the deal can only go so far.

“People will look in five, six, seven or even 10 years and they will judge me on how I’ve run the club and where we are, rather than the fact I’m a supporter.”

Hoyle’s interview is a fascinating part of a John Shires production which charts Town’s fortunes from the arrival of signings Danny Cadamarteri, Malvin Kamara and Frank Sinclair through to the departure of Andy Ritchie and the caretaker spell of Gerry Murphy.

“We were all very surprised about Andy Ritchie’s sacking,” says legendary striker Andy Booth. “We all turned up for training on the Tuesday without having heard a single rumour or report and suddenly he was gone.

“It was a shock, because Andy is a great lad, brilliant to work with and he put on some great training sessions. Perhaps he was just a bit too easy on the players and paid the price.”

Midfielder Michael Collins echoes those views.

“You won’t find anyone at Town with a bad word to say about Andy Ritchie,” says Collins.

“He was very well liked but, as Gerry Murphy always says, football is a results driven business. Andy didn’t get the results this club requires and that’s mainly to do with us, the players.

“We let him down badly and I think a lot of the lads have regrets about that and the fact we under performed for him.”

Murphy, of course, guided Town through an unbeaten run to the end of the season, during which time Ternent and his team were brought in.

“We’re convinced we’ve got the right man this time,” says chairman Davy.

“We wanted real passion, real experience and a record of success and, in Stan Ternent, that’s exactly what we’ve got.”

Ternent is featured on his arrival, Ronnie Jepson talks lovingly about his days as a player with the club – camera work is by Dave Cooper – and then there’s the match action, which only whets the appetite for the new season.

Particularly the cup successes and the home win against Leeds!

“My dad is a big Leeds fan and after I got the winner against them, he didn’t speak to me for two days!” reveals Andy Holdsworth.

“When he came round he admitted that if they were going to lose, he would have wanted me to get the winner, so it wasn’t too bad, but what a brilliant night it was for us and the fans.

“It means so much to Town fans to beat Leeds and we were able to do it for them, so it was a special night.”

The Season Review DVD is available from the Stadium Superstore and Sporting Pride in town.
