TOWN will host Sheffield United in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, August 2.

The Galpharm derby, which comes four days before the visit of Arsenal and a week before the start of the League I campaign, will have a Noon kick-off.

It’s unusual for Town to have two home warm-ups, but boss Stan Ternent was keen for his players to get the feel of their own pitch.

“I was keen for a home game other than Arsenal,” explained Ternent.

“I wanted a different type of test to the one they will give us, but a competitive one, and Sheffield United will certainly provide that.

“I approached Kevin Blackwell (the Blades boss), who I have known for a while, and he was happy to oblige.

“Having another home game will be good for our supporters as well.”

The Blades visit is the third friendly announced by Town, who will head to Bury, one of Ternent’s old clubs, on Saturday, July 19 (3.00).

United finished ninth in the Championship after picking up form under the guidance of Blackwell, who became manager in February.

He led the team to eight wins and three draws in 14 league matches.

The game will mean a return to familiar territory for former Town striker Jon Stead.
