KIRKBURTON moved up to third in Division I of the West Riding County Amateur League with a 3-1 victory at Keighley-based Bronte Wanderers.
Marsden returned to the top of the section after a 3-1 win at Heckmondwike Town with goals from Poulain, Newiss and Davis, while Kirkburton have two games in hand on second-placed Crag Road United.
Both Bronte and Burton made changes from last week’s meeting when Dean Calcutt’s side beat Bronte 3-2 in the Division I Cup.
And Kirkburton made the first breakthrough when John Allison was awarded a free-kick.
Brendan Aspinall floated the ball into the box, and Ryan Robinson rose superbly to beat the 6ft 4in goalkeeper to the ball on 15 minutes.
Burton went 2-0 up after 25 minutes when Adrian Smith picked the ball up on the right, cut inside and picked out Michael Reynolds who cut back and unleashed an unstoppable shot past the keeper’s dive.
Bronte came close after 35 minutes when the centre-back had a free header at the back post, but he headed just wide, while Scott Bissett in the Burton goal pulled off a superb save just before half-time when Bronte’s captain unleashed a tremendous shot from 30 yards which he tipped over the bar.
Bronte pulled goal back, however, five minutes after the restart, but determined Burton were not going to let this result slip and came close to adding a third from a Robinson corner, but Aspinall’s header struck a post.
Smith thought he had made it 3-1 when he beat two defenders and sent the keeper the wrong way with his shot, but he somehow managed to save it with his legs.
Smith made amends on 80 minutes when he scored from Robinson’s corner.
