PAUL CARMAN shot one-over-par 73 in near gale-force winds at Fairhaven, Lytham, in the latest PGA North Region WInter pro-am – in which only two men broke par.

They were Yorkshire champion Adrian Ambler and Welshman Simon Edwards, Carman’s PGA Fourball Championship partner.

There’s no stopping Ambler just now – the Walton Golf Centre (Wakefield) pro, who no longer has need for spectacles after undergoing eye laser treatment, stormed to a second North Region win of the winter by mastering the tough conditions with a three-under-par 69 for a one-shot edge on Edwards.

An eagle at the final hole clinched him the £440 top prize after he also made three birdies.

Carman, who finished in a three-way tie for fourth spot, picked up £151 and Mirfield Driving Range’s Robert Kershaw tied eighth on four-over 76.

The North Region have announced dates for two flagship events.

The Leeds Cup, professional golf’s oldest tournament first won by Open champion legend Harry Vardon at the turn of the last century, will be staged at its traditional home, Leeds (Cobble Hall), on August 19-21.

The Rock, with a top £30,000 prize fund, returns to Matfen Hall in Northumberland on August 25-27.

Leading scores at Fairhaven: 69 - A Ambler (Walton GC); 70 - S Edwards (Clays); 72 - M Shepphard (DMC Golf); 73 - P Carman (Huddersfield), M Beoresaty (Crompton and Royton), C Corrigan (Haigh Hall); 74 - A Crompton (Haigh Hall).
