International keeper Danny Ward has reportedly finalised a new five-year contract at Liverpool – and that should give the green light to a season-long loan move to Huddersfield Town .

However the 23-year-old’s Euro 2016 involvement with Wales means he is unlikely to link up with David Wagner’s squad in time for the pre-season Shankly Trophy clash with the Anfield club on Wednesday, July 20.

Ward has also been linked with Celtic, but it’s understood Town are in pole position for his services.

The Town move is set to be completed after the former Wrexham player was rewarded with a new deal following the eye-catching progress he has made over the past 12 months.

He impressed on loan at Aberdeen before being recalled by Jurgen Klopp in January and installed as Simon Mignolet’s deputy.

Ward made two composed first-team appearances towards the end of last season, then shone for Wales in their group victory over Slovakia at Euro 2016.

With Liverpool signing German Loris Karius from Mainz to compete with Mignolet for the role of Anfield No1, Klopp has decided another spell away from the club in 2016/17 would be best for Ward’s development.

And the German boss will be happy his best mate Wagner will look after Ward, who will compete with Joel Coleman for the Town keeper’s shirt.

Coleman cost £100,000 from Oldham Athletic earlier this close-season.
